The Challenge

AG’s engineering partner Maccaferri Construction was appointed by Breheny to build the new Sunday’s Hill bypass in Hampshire from Pylands Lane to Heath House Lane, Bursledon near the M3 –M27 intersection.

The road reinforces the local infrastructure related to the new development of 1,350 new homes on the site of a former golf course at Boorley. The development is being built by a consortium, comprising of Bovis Homes, Bloor Homes and Linden Home.

The Solution

AG were selected as supplier of walling products to the bypass which stretches 1.1km in length and sought to facilitate much needed housing development in the area.

Consideration of health and safety issues for this project included ensuring the structure could withstand the heavy load of regular vehicular traffic, as well as minimising disruption to the local area during and after construction.

AG’s Anchor Landmark® was selected as the ideal product for the task as its unique dry-build locking system generates less dust, noise and waste than traditional blockwork, as well as allowing for fast-track construction in all weather conditions. Its unique locking mechanism also facilitates high performance under extreme loading conditions and is the ideal solution to even the most challenging retaining wall projects.

A combination of AG’s half height blocks and tapered full blocks in the shade ‘Basalt’ were used in order to achieve a seamless finish. The Anchor Landmark® system also features a split face of slightly varying depths, which provided an aesthetically pleasing, textured finish to the retaining wall structure.

As the Sunday’s Hill site is ecologically sensitive, careful consideration had to be given to the construction of the bypass in order to ensure that local flora and fauna were preserved and able to flourish. In addition to this, local wildlife was given special consideration in the construction of the bridge, which allows bats and other animals to safely traverse their natural habitat whilst avoiding vehicular traffic. AG is committed to the preservation of bio-diversity across its sites and this project was no exception to this mentality.

We were extremely pleased yet again with the performance of our market-leading Anchor Landmark® system for walling. On a project of this scale, the highest standards of health and safety are pivotal as well as managing labour costs by ensuring time-efficient installation-challenges AG were able to meet head-on.
