Every Great Project, Starts with a Plan

By Ronan O’Dowd, Landscape Designer at AG Paving & Building Products.

When it comes to creating an outdoor space you’ll love, one of the biggest mistakes I see is leaving the planning until the last minute.

Whether you’re thinking about a new patio, driveway, outdoor entertaining area or a complete garden transformation, taking the time to plan properly can make all the difference.

At AG Paving & Building Products, we offer a Free 2D Design Service to help bring your ideas together before you commit to the project. From my experience as a landscape designer, here are five reasons why I always recommend starting your planning early.

Get ahead of the seasons

One of the best times to start thinking about your garden is actually before you’re ready to start building it.

Planning in Autumn or Winter gives you time to consider how you want to use your space, explore different hardscape and softscape materials, and create a design that works for your home and lifestyle.

Then, when early spring arrives, you’re ready to develop the project rather than starting from scratch.

Beat the busy period

Spring and summer are when the demand for garden designers, landscapers and tradespeople really starts to increase.

If you leave your project until the warmer months, you may find that the people you want to work with are already fully booked.

Planning ahead gives you more choice and, importantly, more time to make decisions without feeling pressured. It means you can get your design finalised, materials selected and trades organised well before you’re ready to start.

A little preparation now can save a lot of frustration later.

Spread the cost

A garden project is an investment, so understanding the potential cost early is important.

Starting your planning sooner gives you time to work out what you want to achieve, understand the different options available and establish a realistic budget.

You can compare quotes, consider different materials and decide which elements are most important to you. Perhaps the full project needs to happen in stages and planning ahead gives you the flexibility to prioritise the workload.

Having a clear plan makes it much easier to make informed decisions about where your budget is best spent.

Enjoy your garden sooner

This might sound obvious, but the sooner you start planning, the sooner you can enjoy the finished result.

I often speak to homeowners who have been thinking about transforming their garden for months or even years. They know they want to make better use of the space but haven’t known where to start.

That’s where a design can really help.

Seeing your ideas laid out visually can make the project feel much more achievable. It allows you to understand how the different elements will work together and gives you a clear direction for the next steps.

Instead of another summer looking at the garden and thinking “we really need to do something with this,” you could be enjoying a space designed around how you actually live.

Avoid rushed decisions

Perhaps the biggest benefit of planning early is simply having time to get things right.

Your outdoor space is something you’ll hopefully enjoy for many years, so it’s worth taking the time to consider the layout, materials, colours, planting and practical details properly.

A rushed decision can mean compromising on the things you really wanted or choosing a quick fix that doesn’t quite work for the space.

With more time, you can explore your options, make changes and refine the design until you’re happy with the overall vision.

Start with a plan

For me, good landscape design is about creating a space that looks great but, more importantly, a space that works for you.

That process starts with understanding the space, discussing your ideas and putting a plan together.
