Top Tips for Your Garden Through Autumn/Winter
As autumn settles in and winter approaches, your outdoor space and its maintenance may slowly start to move down your ‘to-do’ list but that doesn’t mean it should be forgotten completely. In fact, this is the perfect time to prepare, protect, and even plan ahead!
Whether you’re tidying up or planning a makeover, here are some essential tips to keep your garden a key area of your home.
1. Clear Fallen Leaves and Debris
Keep your grass areas, borders, and paved areas tidy by regularly sweeping up wet leaves and garden waste. Not only does this keep the appearance tidy, but it also helps prevent moss and slippery surfaces during damp weather.

2. Protect Tender Plants
Applying mulch around the base helps insulate the roots and keeps the soil in good condition throughout the colder months.

3. Prune and Cut Back
Trim away dead or dying stems from shrubs and herbaceous plants. This tidies up your garden and encourages healthy new growth when spring returns.

4. Plant for Spring
Autumn is ideal for planting bulbs like tulips, daffodils, and crocuses. They’ll lie dormant and surprise you with colour when the weather changes – a great little addition with minimal work!

5. Support Wildlife
Place bird feeders, water dishes, and log piles around your garden to provide food and shelter for local wildlife. Even in winter, your outdoor space can offer a safe and welcoming haven for birds, hedgehogs, and other little garden visitors.

6. Maintain Tools and Furniture
Give your tools a thorough clean before storing them away to prevent rust and wear. Protect outdoor furniture by covering it or moving it indoors (if possible), this will help ensure it remains in good condition for its return in Spring.
