At AG, we take immense pride in recognising the enduring dedication and contributions of our team. This summer, we said a fond farewell to two of our esteemed colleagues, John Kirkpatrick and Ken Parsons, whose combined 88 years of service exemplify the supportive and positive environment that AG fosters.

John Kirkpatrick’s journey with AG began in 1968, a time when the world was markedly different – the average UK house price was a modest £3,716, and John was a 16-year-old with a bright future ahead. Recognising his potential, AG’s manager at the time reached out to John’s mother with an offer of employment, and thus began John’s remarkable career with us.

Over the next 56 years, John’s role evolved significantly. He transitioned from working in the brick press area to becoming a cornerstone of our Besser plant’s success at our Fivemiletown site. His expertise was crucial in setting up the factory, and as he progressed to roles such as Besser Supervisor and Maintenance Fitter his versatility shone through.

Reflecting on his long tenure, John marvels at the transformation from his early days of manual labour to the sophisticated, automated processes of today. His passion for his work remains unwavering, and even in retirement, he plans to maintain his early mornings, tending to his cattle daily at 5:30am—a true testament to his enduring dedication and character.

Ken Parsons embarked on his journey with AG in August 1992, just as SNAP!’s “Rhythm is a Dancer” was taking over the charts. Encouraged by his brother-in-law, Ken began his career in quality control. Over his 32-year tenure, Ken became known for his versatility—whether drilling, blasting, or driving dump trucks, he was always ready to lend a hand wherever needed.

Ken fondly recalls the camaraderie and friendships formed with his managers and colleagues. His role as the ‘spare man’ exemplified his willingness to adapt and support his team. As Ken transitions to retirement, he will immerse himself in his passion for farming, tending to his sheep and cattle. His reflections on his time with AG are filled with gratitude: “I’ve really enjoyed my time here. The company has always taken great care of us—something you wouldn’t find elsewhere.”

Stephen Acheson, CEO of AG, reflected on these exceptional career milestones, stating, “John and Ken’s extraordinary journeys with AG truly exemplify the strength of our community and the enduring relationships we foster. Their dedication, adaptability, and friendship are a source of inspiration for all of us. We extend our heartfelt gratitude for their invaluable contributions and wish them the very best in their well-deserved retirements.”

As we celebrate John and Ken’s retirements, we honour a rich tradition of long service at AG. Their stories join the ranks of past colleagues who have shaped our company with their dedication and excellence, inspiring us all to pursue the same passion and commitment in our own work.

Earlier this year, AG unveiled an upgraded Long Service Recognition Awards programme to tangibly honour the dedication of our employees – reflecting our continued commitment to nurturing a culture of appreciation and recognition within our organisation.
