David Speirs

Head of Specification and Commercial Sales

David Speirs has been with AG since January 2007 and is currently the Head of Specification and Commercial Sales.

Why did you decide to follow your chosen career path?

I grew up in a family that worked within the construction sector. My Dad and brother both worked for AG in the past and having returned from a spell in America, I felt it was a good opportunity to work for a business I was relatively familiar with.

What does your day to day job entail?

My current job title of Head of Sales & Specification in Northern Ireland is essentially working with and leading a team to achieve the commercial sales target.

Within this role I deal with almost every department in AG and each day provides different challenges and rewards. I could be attending meetings around production schedules, visiting customers on-site or presenting training sessions to Stockists. No two days are the same and that for me is part of the reason I love doing it.

What do you enjoy about working at AG?

I enjoy the challenge of my role, the feeling of securing a sale and contributing to the success of the business. I enjoy the rapport I have with my colleagues; I think there is a genuine family feel to the business and anyone who works here has a real desire to see the business succeed.

What would you say to someone considering joining the team at AG?

Don’t hesitate!! If you have a positive mentality, willingness to learn and a desire to develop a successful career then AG is a place that can help you achieve those goals.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I have four children at home aged from 4 to 11 so most of my spare time is taken up being the taxi to football and other activities. I’m a football nut though and run a local Youth Football club which caters for about 180 kids weekly. In my spare spare time, I enjoy playing a little golf and make a great spaghetti bolognese.

When did you join AG and what was your role?

When I joined AG it was as a Sales Advisor in the Brick & Paving Centre (now Outside Rooms). I remember my first ‘big sale’ which was 16,000 Lanyon Oranmore brick for a one-off build. I had a smile from ear-to-ear for days. The Outside Rooms role provided me with a great understanding of products and the sales process. I enjoyed it very much.

How has AG changed over the years?

There have been many changes in AG over the years, we’ve had the pain of a recession, rebranded the business and made real progress in the GB market. We have continued to be innovative in the products we bring to market and that brings challenges but also great opportunities.

Looking forward to the future, AG can continue to grow and establish ourselves as one of the best Paving and Building Material suppliers in the UK and Ireland.
