The Challenge
Aberdeen City Council launched the ‘Tillydrone Housing Project’ as part of their 2022 Housing Programme to tackle the pressing shortage of affordable social rented housing in the city. This initiative led to the creation of 70 new homes in Tillydrone, Aberdeen, designed as a ‘pocket neighborhood’ to foster community spirit and strengthen neighbourhood identity.
The development includes a mix of apartments and semi-detached homes that are economical, sustainable, energy-efficient, and adaptable to meet the diverse needs of tenants.
The Solution
CHAP Group partnered with Aberdeen City Council Housing Programme to choose an affordable, low-carbon masonry brick, ultimately selecting AG’s Woodward range in the Antique finish to complete Tillydrone’s residential units.
Our Woodward Low Carbon Masonry Facing Brick in shade Durrow Cream incorporates Enduur 1, an advanced concrete technology that boosts strength, durability, and UV resistance. This innovation reduces the range’s carbon footprint while offering superior hydrophobic performance.
A more cost-effective, and lower carbon alternative to traditional clay brick, Woodward was selected not only for its environmental innovations, but also for its aesthetic appeal. The Durrow Cream colour blend with its rumbled finish gives the housing development a charming style that complements its picturesque surroundings.
The residential project ultimately achieved the Scottish Building Regulations’ Gold Standard, marking the first instance in Aberdeen to receive this accolade. This recognition was awarded for meeting the required levels across eight Sustainable Holistic Design Principles, including embodied carbon, where AG’s Woodward range played a key role.
